prepare a short, carefully-crafted paper. These papers are to be

exegetical​​or interpretive​, which means that the task is not to

explain what they are saying—and why—in the passages under

discussion. In so doing, you will be defending a certain interpretation

of the texts at hand. This is not meant to be a research paper. You

should not consult or cite any sources other than the texts you have

been asked to read in this class. In constructing your argument, you

should restrict yourself to examining the relevant portions of the texts,

and clearly pointing to those passages that support your particular

reading of the text. In addition, you are called upon to some extent to

synthesize the various views under consideration, by contrasting the

approaches of the two authors.

Answer the following question in an essay of 6 to 7 pages (with

margins of no more than 1-inch, and font of no more than 12-point):

In what ways, if any, do John Stuart Mill and Karl Marx each

seem to have been influenced by Aristotle? In other words, what

specific parts of Aristotle’s thought seem, if at all, to have

influenced Mill and Marx’s thought respectively? Meanwhile,

how, if at all, do Mill and Marx each seem to depart from or

differ from Aristotle? Make an overall argument about whether

you see strong theoretical influences from Aristotle to each of

these thinkers, or whether you see strong contrasts and

departures between Aristotle, and the thinking of Mill and Marx

respectively.

In answering this question, think carefully about how Mill and Marx

thought about the centrality of a certain kind of human “flourishing,”

and whether/how this view might have been influenced by a certain

Aristotelian understanding of humanness as defined by “excellence.”

Be sure also to link this discussion to how, if at all, this conception of

“flourishing” influences each of their (Marx and Mill’s) ideas about

liberty or freedom. In thinking about Mill, pay attention to what he

says about the “Greek ideal of self-development.” In thinking about

Marx, ask yourself what Marx would make of Aristotle’s distinction

between “mere life” and the “good life,” as well as between humans

and animals. Is Marx’s thinking teleological? If so, how? And, in

thinking about how Mill and Marx each differs or departs from

Aristotle, think about the ideal or utopian vision of society that each

of them (Mill and Marx) give us. To what extent do these ideal visions

align with or depart from Aristotle’s ideal society? This last question

should help you think through the differences between them and

Aristotle.
