Budget Process

During the first three weeks of the course, establish a time to meet with a unit/department nursing manager. The person must have fiscal and budgeting responsibility. The intent of this meeting is to learn about the budget process in the department or organization and potential opportunities for improvement. (If you have not secured an interview by the end of week one, contact your instructor to discuss.) During the interview, discuss the following issues:

• Describe the budget process for the department/organization.
• How is it developed, what is the process, and who is involved in the development?
• In what way is the nurse manager held accountable for the department budget? Describe the process.
• What type of budgeting is used and why? (Flexible budgeting, incremental or zero-based?). Describe the Case Mix Index for the unit and or organization?
• Discuss and identify with the manager two key areas that are in need of improvement.
• What can be done to improve these areas?
• How can the nursing staff help meet those improvements?
• The scholarly paper should be not more than four (4) pages excluding the title and reference pages.
• Include level 1 and level 2 headings, an introductory paragraph, purpose statement and a conclusion.
• Write the paper in third person, not first person (meaning do not use ‘we’ or ‘I’).
• Include a minimum of two (2) references from professional peer-reviewed nursing journals to support your paper. References should be from scholarly peer-reviewed journals (review in Ulrich Periodical Directory) and be less than five (5) years old.
• APA format is required (attention to spelling/grammar, a title page, a reference page, and in-text citations).
• Submit the assignment to Turnitin.com prior to your final submission to the assignment drop box by the posted due date. Please be sure to review the originality report and make any needed changes prior to submitting to the assignment drop box.
