EXTRA-CREDIT OPPORTUNITIES

As described in the syllabus throughout the semester students have the opportunity to complete up to 3 optional assignments. THESE ARE NOT REQUIRED. Students who choose to complete one or more optional assignments will receive a maximum of 1 extra credit point toward their final course grade for each assignment submitted. These assignments must be completed by the last day of class, December 9th.

Once you have completed an assignment, please submit it to the class Teaching Assistant, Kevin Young, at kyoung16@masonlive.gmu.edu . MAKE CERTAIN THAT YOUR PAPER HAS THE CLASS AND SECTION NUMBER PLUS YOUR NAME.

Extra-Credit Opportunity No. 1

Why are former NFL athletes at increased risk of depression, dementia, and suicide?

Submit a typed or computer generated paper of no fewer than three double-spaced content pages (i.e. not including a cover page or reference page) that answers the above question. Students may draw from any resource they choose; however, resources must be cited using APA format both in the body of the paper and on the reference page. Some people believe that alcoholism is a character flaw, a moral failure, or a sin. Others believe that alcoholism is a disease. From a physiological and psychological perspective explain why alcoholism is accepted today in America as a disease.

The Oscar nominated film Silver Linings Playbook was originally a gift from the director to his son, Matthew, who suffers from bipolar disorder.

View this film and submit a typed or computer generated paper of no fewer than two double-spaced content pages (i.e. not including a cover page or reference page) that explains how the film deals with bipolar depression and the stigma that is often associated with this disorder. Did the film have any impact on your feelings about mental illness?
