Write a 3-4 page paper (750-1000 words) where you defend or criticize one of the arguments presented in Part I.

Your task is to demonstrate that you

Understand the chosen argument and can articulate it clearly and accurately
Are able to think critically about the argument and can articulate clearly and accurately your analysis
Required elements:

Exposition of the chosen argument.
If critical, then explain the defect in the argument. And, raise and respond to an objection to the defect.
If positive, then explain the merit of the argument. And, raise and respond to an objection to the merit.
Recommendations:

Length is a recommendation (soft-requirement) that indicates the size and scope of this project. Please keep in mind the size and scope of this project. You have a choice about thesis. Choose wisely:
Do not aim at settling the matter about the attribute in question. Aim instead at analyzing an element or specific feature of the chosen argument.
Choose an argument that you understand or are willing to work through so that you understand it.
Defect or merit: choose one that you can explore in depth, where you can develop and demonstrate your analytical abilities.
Objection: if you cannot think of a compelling or reasonable objection (even though it ultimately fails), then choose something else to discuss. For this assignment, you must engage in the give and take of reasons, and show your awareness of and sensitivity to competing considerations.
Use lots of signposts or even bulleting or numbering. It is more important that you express clearly what you are trying to say than that your expressions are aesthetically pleasing.
Outside research is not required. However, as philosophy is easiest when you aren’t just thinking about it yourself, you may find some additional research helpful. Please cite any and all sources. Work that you present as your own must really be your own!
