You are required to write a term paper of 20 pages length on a research
article that has been published in the last 12 months. lt is due Wed., Nov.
23 in class and is worth 24% of your course grade.
2. The research article is on the effects of a dietary supptement on a
biological system, and ultimately on a clinical health claim. You must: a)
describe in general terms what the dietary supplement is and the medical
problem (s) it is supposed to help with (prevent, ameliorate, cure) b)
describe the research paper, including key experimental techniques, key
results and major conclusions c) scientifically evaluate the article and d)
draw conclusions about the article relative to the overall literature and the
relevant health claim.
3. You will work with a partner who has an interest in the sanle dietary
supplement, but will evaluate a differ,ent research article and perhaps a
different health claim. You will only have to work together on the
intioduction [2a, usually about 4 pages], but work independently on your
own research article (12 b, c and d, usually about 8 pages eachl. You
might find it useful to compare and contrast your 2 articles at the end. You
will be graded separately, mostly on2 b, c and d.
4. Any discussion needs to include analysis at a molecular level
(proposed mechanism of action), cellular effects, organ-level effects and.
up to the intact organism / human patient.

A requirement for BlOC.4520 is the completion of a term paper on the topic of dietary
supplements (worth 24o/o of course grade). A dietary supplement is a product intended to
supplement the diet that bears or contains one or more of the following dietary ingredients:
a) vitamin, mineral, or amino acid b) herb or other botanical c) dietary substance or d)
concentrate, metabolite or combination.

in a thoughtful, critical (good and bad) manner. Your term paper should be no more than 20
paoes double spacqd (not including figures, references, etc.). A one-page outline and a
copy of your paper is due the lpqt Friday of Sept. lt will not be graded, and you will get 1%
on your course grade for handing it in on time. The purpose of the outline is to ensure you
