The Sweatshop Debate and Business Ethics

We spent some time in class discussing both sides of the “Sweatshop debate.” If you choose to write about sweatshops, you need to build an argument in which you clearly state your position in relation to the global and pressing problem of sweatshops. In your paper, you must: 1) identify what the sweatshop debate is; 2) identify the ethical problem concerning sweatshops; 3) take a clear stance on the question whether sweatshops are a necessary part of the supply chain, and 4) (if possible) provide some strategies or proposals for solutions.

In your analysis, you can use the articles and essays we discussed. Even though this assignment DOES NOT ask you to bring a specific case study of a company involved in a sweatshop controversy, you have the freedom to use a case study involving a real company if that makes it easier for you to structure your thinking and writing.

YOUR ARGUMENT: This option is asking you to build an in-depth analysis of what your understanding is of the “Sweatshop debate.” In your discussion of the topic, your paper must present a clearly articulated position vis-a-vis the “Sweatshop controversy.” You should start thinking about what connections you could draw between the ideas you gathered from the articles you’ve read and the concepts you have chosen to work with.
