Knowledge Generation
Knowledge Generation Project management concepts have application to my practice. Critical thinking and decision-making are an integral aspect of the day-to-day nursing practice. The hospice nurse is required to develop complex pain and symptom assessment and management plans and sophisticated patient care and support strategies.
The five project management steps, design, plan, implement, monitor and evaluate, provide an excellent basis on which the provider can develop and implement highly professional care strategies (Sipes, 2015).
Each nursing action requires the assessment of the problem or situation, development of an appropriate intervention, implementation of the intervention, monitoring the intervention and evaluating the expected outcomes. The nurse can apply her knowledge of project management to guide her response to a various clinical situations. She must define the standards of care for the particular problem in order to develop an effective intervention.
An ongoing assessment of the applied clinical interventions allows the early identification and correction of deviations from the intended goals (Sermeus, Procter, & Weber, 2016). The nurse should base the assessment on evidence-based quality improvement goals. Interprofessional collaboration is an integral aspect of patient care. Obtaining the input of other professionals during the development and implementation of the care interventions supports rational goals and progress benchmarking.
The nurse can apply concepts of project management teams to develop effective interprofessional relationships. Timely and effective communication of the care plan among the concerned stakeholders is critical to the success of the applied interventions. The sequence of quality improvement steps can be repeated until the individual, unit or organization attains the intended goals (Spath, 2013). Inconsistencies in the original goals can be identified during the repeat exercise and resolved.
