Health care in the United States has been an ongoing issue and a concern for many Americans. Government lawmakers continue to debate over the topic of health care. Meanwhile millions of Americans have little or no health coverage.

The United States is a wealthy nation and unfortunately no progress has been made to develop a universal health care system. Some 47 million U.S. residents have no health insurance, and the numbers keep growing, (“What’s wrong with America’s Health Care”, n.d.)

The cost of health care provided by employers has increased. Most of the cost is shifted towards the employees as it becomes a struggle to pay higher premiums, deductibles, and co-payments. Family coverage has increased for less comprehensive plans and prescriptions are costly. As health continues to become a long-term fiscal challenge for society understanding the affects of healthcare by behaviors, economics, and social structure may help to reduce health care cost.

Patients, families, community leaders, and health care professionals struggle to understand connections between health and behavior. That knowledge can improve the health status of individuals and populations. Health and behavior are related in numerous ways, yet those relations are neither simple nor clear-cut.

Given the acknowledgment that cigarette smoking is linked to a variety of deadly diseases, for instance, the reason why people begin smoking. Evidence connecting excess weight with cardiovascular disease and other health issues, is the reason so many people are above his or her normal weight. Unhealthy behavior indicates a lack of willpower.

Stress makes people sick, or illness can produce stress. Intervention is necessary in modifying behavior and personal relationships. Social environment influence these behaviors.
