Research Paper/Presentation Guidelines

 

 

Your research project will consist of either a class presentation OR a written paper.  For this project, choose an area of interest (a country, geographic realm, city or region) and research an important issue for that area (e.g., Madagascar – focus on endangered species on the island; India – population problems there and what the government is trying to do about it).  If you are doing a presentation, try to enhance your presentation by finding images of your geographic area (i.e., try doing a search on-line…www.google.com and click on images).  Class presentations should be no longer than 10 minutes.  Written papers should be between 6-8 pages (typed, double-spaced, 12 pt. font, bibliography).

 

The following points should be considered as you complete your research project.  A successful research project should have all of these components, as well as other criteria you deem appropriate.

 

RESEARCH:

• Academic journal articles, books, encyclopedias, newspaper/magazine articles, etc.
• Do NOT use only internet sources – you must have at least 2 sources that are NOT from the internet!
• Be sure to cite your sources in both the paper/presentation AND in the bibliography (can be any format – e.g., MLA, APA)

 

 

GENERAL:

• Paper or presentation should be free of any spelling, grammatical, or syntax errors
• Paper or presentation should be well organized, thorough, and clearly written/presented
• Paper length: between 6-8 pages, typed, double-spaced, 12-pt. font. Bibliography does NOT count towards this paper length!
• Presentation length: between 5-10 minutes, Powerpoint slideshow optional and not required – however, please have images, pictures, music, artifacts, samples, interviews, etc., to enhance presentation.

 

*Note: grades will be based not only on the criteria outlined here, but also on the quality and thoughtfulness of the research project.
