DOCUMENTED ARGUMENT ESSAY

The Documented Argument Essay is intended to allow you to join in an ongoing debate by expressing your opinion on a topic that interests you and convincing readers of the value of your belief through evidence from research (logos), through your own knowledge and the use of experts (ethos) and through tapping into your audience’s beliefs and feelings (pathos).  Part of your credibility will come from an acknowledgment and skillful handling of important opposition.

Assignment: 4-6 pages, MLA style with added Works Cited page and in-text documentation (using Steps to Writing Well and other sources for MLA format), minimum of 4 sources.  Assume an audience that is neutral or that reasonably disagrees with you but is capable of changing its mind.  Assume that your audience has no more than a general knowledge of your topic.  Pick a topic that has (at least) two reasonable opposed positions.

Finding a Topic: You may continue with controversial topic from your annotated bibliography, or pick a topic from one of the library resources after clearing topic with instructor. The link to the research guide for our course is posted in our course’s MyPima.

Essay should:

“define the issue,

take a clear position,

make a convincing argument, and

acknowledge opposing views” (Penguin Handbook 120).

To do these tasks, the essay may be organized by the following structure:

Although

should

because

This structure sets up an acknowledgment of the opposition (Although caging chickens allows for the greatest possible production per area, thus minimizing prices, and although . . .).

It sets up your claim or thesis (We should outlaw factory production of chickens).

It sets up your reasons (because we have a moral obligation to minimize suffering of animals under our control, because . . .).  Although this structure helps insure a complete argument, it is awkward and should be modified to become part of your introductory paragraph.

ARGUMENT STRUCTURE

Intro ¶: The lead-in should get our attention and interest (detailed story, example, explanation, description, dramatic fact, or some other method).  Make it provide a context for the issue, and make sure it’s relevant to your point.  Avoid generalizations (“Throughout history . . .”)

Make your position clear in the thesis (“should” statement)—it’s not a question.  The focus should be narrow enough for a 4 to 6 page essay.  Thesis should be final sentence of intro ¶.

Optional in Intro. ¶:  Give us your main reasons (“because”).

Clearly identify important opposition (“although”), and make it clear that you disagree with the opposition.

Body ¶s: Each topic sentence should relate to the thesis.  If the ¶ presents the opposition, your disagreement with that opposition should be clear in the topic sentence.

Use specific details.  If you use quotations, lead in to them and follow-up by connecting them to the thesis.    Follow MLA parenthetical documentation style for any quotations: (author page).

Clearly explain how the details establish/support your point.

Avoid accidental plagiarism because of insufficient documentation or because of mixing the source’s words with your own.

Conclusion:  Possibly suggest what would happen if the advice is or isn’t followed, or emphasize the importance of your main point.  Why does this matter?

If you suggest implications, make sure they follow from what you’ve said.

Include echoes of the introduction.

Works Cited: Make sure Works Cited page follows MLA format—continues with page numbers of essay, lists sources in alphabetical order by author’s last name (by title if no author), double spaces entries throughout (no extra spaces, no single spaces) using a hanging indent.
