          EBP Project Proposal    I will use the qualitative research approach for my project. My area of interest is managing pain and suffering in the terminally ill patients. This topic requires an in-depth description of the physical, psychological, emotional and spiritual experiences of the study participants. The quantitative research method provides research findings in numerical form. Capturing and describing non-quantifiable variables such as feelings and experiences using the quantitative approach is difficult. On the other hand, the qualitative approach allows the researcher to effectively and comprehensively capture and describe the feelings and experiences of individual or populations and their meanings (Burns, Gray, & Grove, 2014). Furthermore, the approach allows the consideration of specific social and cultural contexts that affect the phenomenon of interest.

PICO Question

In terminally ill patients with unrelieved pain, does the combination of pharmacological and non-pharmacological interventions, lead to a higher level of comfort and transcendence in comparison to the pharmacological interventions.

Problem

Unrelieved pain affects a significant percentage of patients with terminal illnesses. These patients suffer physically, psychologically and emotionally (Marie, 2013). Their quality of life diminishes. The patients’ families also suffer psychologically and emotionally by witnessing their loved one in constant pain. Unrelieved pain is difficult to assess and diagnose due to underlying conditions, which mimic various disorders.

Population

Patients with advanced chronic illnesses such as cancer suffer persistent or intermittent episodes of pain.

Research Design The qualitative research will use the phenomenological study design (Polit & Beck, 2017). This design is the most appropriate for the EBP project problem because it allows the researcher to discover the meaning of a problem or phenomenon as experienced
