The Billion Dollar Pivot

In entrepreneurial startups pivots occur in the middle of the process, but in mature companiespivots are often the beginning of the process. This is because these companies have anestablished offering and business model (the status quo), and innovation often represents a pivotaway from the status quo. In this workshop, you will analyze a market change in a majorindustrial products manufacturer that necessitated a pivot. You will learn to use the BusinessModel Canvas to define what the pivot is, how it aligns or conflicts with the company’s existingbusiness model, identify the key risks in the pivot, and design low resolution prototype-basedexperiments to assess and mitigate these risk and implement the pivot. These will give you aframework and a process for formulating and executing effective pivots in mature firms.
