Psychology– Research Review Paper

You will submit one research article review.  You may select any topic that is covered in your textbook (Shaffer et al., 2010). You must include a photocopy of the entire article that you review.  You must submit a hard copy as well as an electronic copy of your paper via email.

Locate a journal article describing research on a topic related to the course.  Summarize what the authors of the article did, why they did it, what they found, and why the topic is important.  Some journals that are appropriate for this assignment include:  Child Development, Developmental Psychology, Developmental Review, Journal of Adolescent Research, Journal of Educational Psychology, and Journal of Experimental Child Psychology.  Other journals will have appropriate articles, but make sure they are developmental in nature and are peer reviewed (I can help you make this determination).  Psychology Today is not considered a research journal.

 Style

1. 8-10 double-spaced typewritten pages, including title page, and references. (An abstract is not required; if you choose to include an abstract, it will not be included in the page total).

2. Citations, references (possibly only two; Shaffer et al and the article you review), and general layout (e.g., Title Page, Running Head) are to be in APA style. You will lose marks for failing to meet these requirements.

3. Grammar, spelling, and logical organization are important and do “count”!

Content

An introduction to the problem. What is the general topic under investigation?  What is the relevant background (e.g., what contribution do the researchers hope to make)?

1. The research approach, including the type of design, characteristics of the participants, and the measures (dependent variables).
2. The results. What, specifically, did the researchers find?  Do not become embroiled in the statistics, but tell the reader in words what the findings were.
3. The researcher’s interpretation of the results. What did they conclude based on the data?
4. Your evaluation of the paper. This could include your evaluation of the methodology, the clarity of presentation, the importance of the question asked, the importance of the results.
5. Link this research with the material presented in the text and lectures and/or with material available in the public domain (e.g., newspaper or magazine articles; websites for parents). For example, how has this article augmented your understanding of a domain of research?  Has it generated personal interest, or ideas for further research?
