According to the American Cancer Society (ACS), breast cancer is the number one cancer diagnosed in women today; one in eight women will have breast cancer during their lifetime (ACS, 2007). In a report titled “Cancer Facts and Figures 2007–2008,” the ACS estimated that 240,510 women were newly diagnosed with breast cancer in 2007 and that more than 40,000 women of all ages will die from breast cancer (ACS, 2007). Breast cancer represents a pivotal change in any woman’s life regardless of her age. Women fear the diagnosis of breast cancer more than they fear myocardial infarction, although myocardial infarction is more likely to kill them. The experience of breast cancer can create many challenges for a woman; it also can be a catalyst for change and growth. Currently, there is a 90% 5-year survival rate for White women and a 76% survival rate for African American women; 20-year survival rates are greater than 50% (ACS, 2007). Self-transcendence can help women face the challenges of breast cancer and attain a sense of spiritual well-being across the course of the disease and for the remainder of their lives (Reed, 2003). Coward (1998) found that women who have been diagnosed with breast cancer eventually have an increased sense of well-being, have a purpose in life, and develop interconnectedness with others. According to Coward and Reed (1996), through self-transcendence, women with breast cancer can be healed and find meaning in their lives throughout the recovery process. Spiritual well-being and spiritual practices employed by women recovering from breast cancer have not been described in the literature. Knowledge of the spiritual well-being and practices of women recovering from breast cancer is important for holistic nursing care. Nurses can assist women to understand dimensions of spiritual well-being and engage in spiritual practices that lead to enhanced self-transcendence. Purpose of the Study This study was designed to provide additional information about the holistic experiences of women with breast cancer, as reflected in their self-transcendence, spiritual well-being, and spiritual practices. The specific purposes of this study were to (a) describe the relationship between self-transcendence and spiritual well-being and (b) identify the spiritual practices among older women recovering from breast cancer.
