Contrasting and Comparing the Horrors of War

In Lualdi’sCandide, the terrors of the First World War are outlined. Nowadays, people are unfamiliar with the terrors of the First World War and the Second World War. The two battles occurred at different times. Thus, each of the wars covered distinct tactics from the other regarding the kind of warfare. The views of two soldiers, a narrative in Sources of The Making of the West, soldiers, Siegfried Sassoon, and Fritz Franke, express their experiences in the First World War. Franke conveys a horrifying event of trench warfare in a diary entry. Sassoon, on the other hand, scripted a poem of his terrifying experiences in the battle. The war-affected the soldiers together with the witnesses. Through Candide and Sources of The Making of the West, there are several accounts of wars, but each war is expressively distinct, and its prevalence is demonstrated.

Many individuals view war as bloody, catastrophic, and cold. Voltaire’s book notes, “Voltaire had engaged in battle; suffered and witnessed people suffering; witnessed human’s lives lost; No, definitely: these events of scaffolds and stakes and disease and conflicts, was not expected of a peaceful world (Voltaire 7).” Voltaire conveys how he has experienced all these troubles and believes it is the worst nightmare. If a world full of conflicts does not show changes in the aftermath, then Voltaire perspective is correct.

The perspectives of the two soldiers’, on the other hand, outlineFranke’s stand noting, “ All the vegetation slashed to pieces; entire land agitated a yard deep by the strongest shells; corpses; churches and houses destroyed to ashes by fire (Lualdi 220). Franke also contrasts his encounters during the war. Franke witnessed the pain and experienced the difficulties just as Voltaire. These events demonstrate that one should endure pain and overcome challenges when they arise. “The oboes, cannons, and fifes produced a sound that never compared to hell (Voltaire 20)”. Here he compares the sounds in hell and those of battlefields since they resemble those of gunshots on a war zone. “He muted in the commotion of shells, and observed them burst to release dark wire and earth with flurries from hell (Lualdi 228).” This passage is discussing Sassoon inSources of The Making of the West. Sassoon is discussing the loud sounds around his hiding place during the battle, which he compares to hell. Both Sassoon and Voltaire compare hell to war, which demonstrates the terrors of war.

The brutality that occurred in both the First World War and the Second World War was disgusting. It is very critical that Sassoon, Franke, and Voltaire compare war to hell. This instance indicates that the idea of war has been constant throughout.  Both narratives discuss corpses spread all over in Franke’s and Candide’s, as well as other horrors. Voltaire states, “He struggled through over heaps of corpses and dying soldiers.” This comment resembles Franke’s which states, “And every soldier who comes alive must struggle through chaos, enormous burial-ground, and a heap of corpses (Voltaire 85).” From these two accounts, it can be concluded that there were much suffering and deaths in both wars. War compared to hell was common in both battles, but the manner the soldiers fought in the two events was very different.
