Compose an essay of 500-700 words where you identify the criminological theory that you believe best explains juvenile delinquency. Provide a brief explanation of the basic tenets of the theory you have selected and then explain why you believe it best describes a young persons decision to commit delinquent acts.

The theory I feel best explains juvenile delinquency is the cultural deviance theory. This theory focuses on the delinquent values found in lower-class cultures (Bartollas & Schmalleger, 2014). The lifestyle of juveniles living in there deteriorated neighborhoods can lead them to the subcultures of gangs to Fnd acceptance, love and promise of a ” life (Palmerin, 2012). Thistheory can also be termed a cultural transmission theory as the disorganiza²on of the environment in social disorganiza²on theories in turn also leads to cultural deviance (Batollas & Schmalleger, 2014). This theory is built on the premise of conformity to cultural values and norms that are opposite of what we in larger society deem normal. Essen²ally in lower-class cultures it is believed that there is a socializa²on to the subcultural values that will condone the ac²ons as right and just, while larger society and the legal system would deFne it as illegal or criminal. While some feel this behavior is ac²ng out other theorists see this as some lower-class cultures simply carrying out the values which are around them (Miller, 1958). These lower-class cultures value vastly di³erent traits than larger society, described as focal concerns. These focal concerns are: trouble,toughness, smartness, excitement, fate, autonomy (Bartollas & Schmalleger, 2014). Each of theseconcerns or values of the lower-class youth di³er from that of the middle and upper class youth and in turn can lead directly to juvenile delinquency.
