Assignment 1: Essay on Logical Fallacies

What comes to mind when you hear Band Wagon, Hasty Generalization, and Appealing to Emotion. At first glance these three categories they may not seem to have too much in common. However, they are all different types of logical fallacies. Logical fallacies are errors of reasoning. And, they are errors that may be recognized and corrected by critical thinkers. Logic is important to us academically, professionally and personally. As a graduate student, you want to sharpen your ability to identify logical fallacies and avoid making logical fallacies in your writing and discussions.

In this essay, describe logical fallacies and why it is important to be able to identify logical fallacies in arguments. Then, identify five fallacies. Explain the fallacy and then provide an example using a current news report, political argument, or personal experience. Then, discuss how avoid these five can benefit you personally, academically and/or professionally.

What comes to mind first when I hear the terms Band Wagon, Hasty Generalization, and Appealing to Emotion are politicians. Being able to identify logical fallacies is an important skill to gain so that you can be more cautious when choosing a candidate to vote for. The use of logical fallacy is used in order to sway individuals, even if what is said is incorrect. Deciphering what is and is not a logical fallacy is also helpful in academic life as well as being an aid in ones personal life.
