The entire process or approach to care for cancer patients or any other critical illness aim to mobilize the patients self-healing powers instead of employing extraneous medication to combat the disease. The approach to care of cancer involves balancing, motivating, regulating and energizing the whole person (the whole person includes the body, mind, spirit and emotions). Clinician’s intervention in the approach to care for cancer incorporates complementary therapies, spiritual counseling, and dietary advisory, healing and psychological counseling. The approaches are combined within the patients tailored package.

The approach is critical in that, the state supports its endeavors in private, public and voluntary sectors hence creating extended opportunities with a large self-help component (Fann et al., 2012). However, even if there has been limited contribution from oncologists and liaison psychiatrists, orthodox professionals have promoted hostility towards care of cancer.

Secondly, there have been controversial questions and conflict of evidences as to whether the holistic approach to care for cancer improves patient’s survival.

However, according to a recent research by the American Institute for Cancer Research (AICR), it supported the multiple evidences that the approach creates advancements in patient’s quality of life, improves symptom control and improves patient’s satisfaction (Fann et al., 2012).

This paper addresses the holistic approach to care of cancer, it also objects to describe diagnosing and staging approaches including both the side effects of treatment and the symptoms of cancer.

The paper further analysis the present methods applied to lessen both physical and psychological effects of cancer.

Treatment of the cancer requires multi-disciplinary approaches. Therefore, treatment and prevention of cancer is a multifaceted process. In addition to preventing and treating cancer, there are other critical noncancerous issues to address concomitantly.

The noncancerous issues include the person’s coexistent diseases, health behaviors, and the adaptive and preventive care measures. Therefore, the noncancerous issues must be taken into account even if there have been recommendable cooperation among oncologists, surgeons, and radiation oncologists (Fann et al., 2012).
