is part of the Medicare Website is Nursing Home Compare. It is the same site we visited early in the semester. The 1987 Nursing Home Reform Act required its creation. Its purpose is to provide consumers with information used to evaluate where to place a family member needing care. The website was enhanced with the addition of the Five Star Rating System. It was adapted from the Five Star system that is used for hotels (one star is the lowest rating and five stars is the highest).

The website has many features to help consumers navigate the portal, understand the material available and presumably make a decision. You will need to click on the “About Nursing Home Compare,” Tab and the “Data” Tab to learn the basics of this Portal.

The Assignment

Select one nursing home with an Overall Much Above Average rating and a nursing home with a Much Below Average Rating. Review the data in the following drop down menus: Nursing Home Information, Star Rating summary, Health Inspections, Staffing and Quality Measures (make sure you consider the long stay and short stay measures. Also check for any additional information on-line about the facilities in question.
