Paper Guidelines

Format:

• 10 or 12 point font
• clear easy to read font style such as Times New Roman
• Double spaced text
• one inch margins top, bottom, left, and right
• Eight to ten pages of text
• Note citations or parenthetical citations given if text is quoted

Content:

• Your name in right corner of the first page.
• Course number in right corner below name.
• Introductory paragraph that identifies the invention or concept and its impact.
• In the body of the work a discussion of the relevant history, development, inventors, patents, and then the societal impact.
• A concluding paragraph or paragraphs that discuss the lessons that are to be learned from the invention, inventors, and its application.

Things to do and not to do:

• Do not right justify the text. Left justify only.
• Do not use contractions.
• Do not use first person: use third person to refer to yourself.
• Do not plagiarize—by taking someone else’s words as your own or paraphrasing too close.
• Do focus on the entirety of the subject not just the invention or the application.
• Do use the active voice—avoid passive voice.
• Do use topic sentences for your paragraphs and at least two supporting sentences.
• Do include notes if you quote from the text or outside sources.
• Do include a coversheet with your name, class, semester and title.
• Do not use a folder or binder.
• Do put one staple in the upper left corner.
Things I am looking for in grading:

• Spelling errors
• Grammar errors
• Poor sentence structure (run-on or incomplete sentences)
• Poor or no transition from one section to another or from paragraph to paragraph
• Unsupported opinion—no relevant facts to back up opinion
• Missing citation of the book you are reviewing
• Missing citation of review journal or exterior work
• Incorrect information
• Incorrect use of punctuation and capitalization
• Unsupported generalizations
• Excessively long direct quotes
• Excessive quotes
• Poor organization
• Wrong verb tense
• Wrong subject / verb agreement
• Incorrect paper length
• Word repetition
• Missing word
• Repetitive information
