National Security Council Paper Guidelines

Guidelines: Each paper will be written from the perspective of your assigned NSC role. You must advocate to the President of the United States what you believe the best strategy for the USA is in the given situation, be it Drones in Pakistan, Humanitarian Intervention in South Sudan, or the chosen 3rd simulation topic (TBD). You will make an argument based on prior class readings as well as the simulation materials available online through the Council on Foreign Relations (CFR) website (sent to you via email, forthcoming). You should indicate expertise in your assigned NSC role and what that NSC member would advocate to the President. While details of the event/issue are available through the CFR website, it is also imperative that you incorporate IR theory and other background material into the paper that you have read in assigned class readings throughout the semester. You are essentially using IR theory and IR substantive knowledge gained through class readings and discussions, to help support your position on the given simulation topic.
Therefore, for starters, you will want to acquaint yourself with the position you have been assigned. If you are the Secretary of State, you should understand what this position entails and what your role would be most interested in, concerned about, etc. when advocating a position to the President. Second, you should familiarize yourself with the international issue at hand via the CFR online materials. Third, you must think about academic readings from class and how they are related to this particular simulation topic. The final phase is to write a paper that incorporates all of these steps into a well-thought position that you wish the President to read before making his/her final decision on how the USA will act (or not act) in the given situation.
Formatting: Papers must be a minimum of 750 words in length (approximately 3 pages), double spaced, 12-point Times New Roman font, 1 inch margins, and stapled. Papers must be submitted via D2L DropBox as well as a hard copy to your professor by the beginning of class on the due date. Bibliography pages are necessary for any citations used. Please use the MLA style when citing sources or including a Bibliography page. The following website provides useful citation information:
