Comp II Topic Proposal for Researched Argument
For this assignment you will write a 2-4 page essay that describes the rhetorical situation regarding the topic you are writing about for your researched argument paper. Your topic should be an issue of controversy within a chosen professional discipline/field. You will discuss this issue by examining the specific issue’s exigence, its audience, any constraints upon your argument or its delivery, and your role as a rhetor, also incorporating your arguable claim at the end. Essay will be structured in the following manner:
First you will introduce your topic and describe its exigence, meaning that you will discuss what needs to be said about this topic and why it is necessary? (What is Kairos about it?)
You will move on to talk about your audience. You may discuss your addressed audience (those who will read your work), your intended audience (Those who have the power to modify the exigence) and any goals or anticipated audience response.
Then you will discuss constraints, meaning what constraints exist for the mode of delivery of your discourse? What type of constraints exist for you as the rhetor? For your audience? There will always be constraints of one type or another, so to say there are no constraints is to get zero points for this criteria.
Finally, you will discuss yourself as a rhetor. You will describe where you fit in with the topic, meaning, you will talk about your relationship with the exigence. Why do you feel the way you do about this subject matter? Most important question here is, what are you saying that hasn’t already been said? What makes your angle/perspective different? You cannot just rehash the same old arguments, therefore, what are you adding to the subject?
Your discussion of yourself as a rhetor should culminate in your stating your arguable claim, the statement that you intend to be the thesis statement for your researched argument paper. (The arguable claim should be no longer than one sentence, and should be the final sentence in this proposal)
Assignment should be formatted using MLA 8 guidelines.
This assignment will incorporate 3 scholarly sources which will be included in an MLA style Works Cited Page (Works Cited does not count toward length requirements)
