The first assessment of a family and individual is vital to understanding how to administer any form of care. According to Edelman, “ Family health practices, whether effective or ineffective, encompass activities performed by individuals or families as a whole to promote health and prevent disease” (Edelman, 2010). This paper focuses on the “Z” family.

Data about the family using open-ended questions is collected and analyzed to formulate a nursing diagnosis. The open-ended questions are referred to as the “ Gordon’s eleven Functional Health Patterns”.

A beneficial tool for assessing the family’s developed health patterns is the “Gordon’s Functional Health Patterns” which allows the health care provider an enhanced look at the overall condition of a family as a whole; interventions can then be individually created based on the outcomes of the assessment. This paper will discuss the health patterns and views of the “Z” family, which was interviewed by this writer using the “11 Gordon functional health patterns”.

The “Z” family is a family including a husband and wife in there thirties a son who is 8 and daughter who is 3. The husband and wife live in a suburban area with a lot of young couples and young children. The wife is a registered nurse in an ICU and the husband is in sales.

When assessing the “Z” family’s health perception they placed a lot of emphasis on preventative care and perceived themselves as healthy. The Z family participated in yearly doctor appointments and made sure to make an appointment when someone was sick. W…………………
