Differentiated Instruction and Communication

Differentiated instruction is becoming a high demand in many schools. Parents and students want to get the most from their education and by providing a differentiated approach teachers can assist in reaching this goal. Among many, one of the biggest keys to having successful differentiated instruction is keeping open lines of communication.

This also means keeping communication lines open beyond the school itself. While it is important to ensure that educators, students, and faculty have effective communication, it is also just as important to keep parents and the community involved. Achieving this can be done by researching and developing an effective professional development plan (PDP).

A professional development plan “is a process for the renewal of an educator’s license based on planned professional growth and evidence of the impact of that growth on student learning.” (TEPDL, n.d.) By gathering data from teachers and students one can determine what professional growth is needed to build a PDP accordingly.

First, one should take time to reflect on their career and gain self-awareness, after all meaningful professional development helps prepare and support teachers so that they may assist students in achieving higher standards of learning. (EduCause, n.d.) Preparing a PDP goes along with having a Professional Learning Community (PLC) to make things run more smoothly within the school.

Working within a PLC can also help you gather outside sources and input for your PDP as well. “A professional learning community (PLC) is an ongoing process through which teachers and administrators work collaboratively to seek and share learning and to act on their learning, with the goal of enhancing their effectiveness as professionals for students’ benefit” (Hord, 2009).
