In 1972, the Kansas City, Missouri Police Department experimented with different levels of police patrol. Their experiment and findings are discussed in your text. Discuss the significance of that study to American policing, how the experiment was structured, and its findings and implications. Apply your understanding of the experiment to a discussion of how you think your community should be patrolled (highly active patrol strategies versus lesser levels of patrol), and present your findings to your classmates.

Questions you should answer include:

1. Do the police need to respond immediately to every call for service? Describe the type of calls police should respond to immediately, and the type of calls they can respond at a later time. Finally, describe some forms of differential police responses to calls for service, and how the responses could best be used to free police officers up for directed patrol activities.
2. Should citizens accept that fact that he police may not respond immediately to their call of a minor theft?
3. How long should a citizen have to wait for a police officer if they see drug dealing or prostitution taking place in front of their home?
4. Should citizens expect police to respond immediately to every call for service, no matter what that call is?
