Reflecting on Personal Identity and Global Citizenship

Introduction

Global education has become more important in the communal education system globally. Currently, many individuals are brought up in the globalized world (Global Education and Global Citizenship, 2012).  In this paper, I will highlight the implication of enlightening other people on global citizenship. I will also tackle the results of global citizenship as they relate to the growth of personal identity. The results include intergroup understanding, valuing differences, social impartiality, environmental maintenance, intergroup assisting, and the level of accountability to act for the benefit of the universe.  In the paper, I will also highlight two examples in my life that demonstrate the growth of global citizenship founded on the results. I will also analyze how my broad education paths influenced me to become a world citizen. 

Enlightening others on global education assists them in understanding intricate social, political, environmental and economic issues. It also assists one to derive new ways of thinking and acting. In this case, one may get to understand other cultures and through this they will be able to acquire new ways of thinking through the understanding of the new culture and its beliefs (Global Education and Global Citizenship, 2012).

Global citizenship refers to the understanding, compassionate, and accepting cultural differences while encouraging social justice and sustainability, together with a sense of accountability to act.  The outcomes of global citizenship assist in the growth of individual identity. Personal identity refers to a construction that is based on person’s surrounding environment. Global citizenship assists one to understand other people; in this case, one can develop a personality that matches the culture of other persons. One also gets to understand and value differences in the different societies. Through appreciating the differences one is encouraged to embrace them and develop an identity that is based on the differences. The surrounding environment can also assist a person in understanding the value of differences. The community teaches a person the importance of embracing difference and thus, one can develop identical values (Reysen & Katzarska-Miller, 2012).  Through the development of personal identity, one is also able to develop social impartiality. One gets to understand the importance of social impartiality, and this encourages one to develop the same attributes.  Through understanding personal identity, an individual is also able to embrace environmental maintenance. One gets to understand the importance of safeguarding their surrounding environment.

 One’s environment can also influence how a person reasons about the environment. Through understanding one’s opinion, an individual is also able to develop values such as intergroup assisting. One can understand the importance of helping others, and this encourages a healthy inter-social relationship (Reysen & Katzarska-Miller, 2012). When one can understand the importance of assisting other people and also working together in a group, they can enact these values in their personal life.  The surrounding environment can also contribute to the development of the value of intergroup assisting. For instance, if one lives in an environment the people are helping each other there is a possibility that they will also develop the values. Through the understanding of one’s personal identity, a person is also able to establish a level of accountability to act for the sake of the world. A person can understand their purpose in ensuring that the world is a good and safe place to live.

Personally, I have to appreciate and embrace the cultural diversities in our country. The value has been encouraged by the interaction with people of different culture in our school where I get to learn about their various understandings. For instance, when I visit a new place I am eager to learn about their culture, and I try to enact them in my personal life (Reysen & Katzarska-Miller, 2012). 

I have also developed intergroup understanding. I can understand other people from various countries and also work with them whenever I get a chance.  For instance, our school consists of people from various countries, and we are required to work with them during group discussion. Therefore, by understanding their culture, I can work with them without any problems (Reysen & Katzarska-Miller, 2012).  I am also able to interact with other people outside the school, for instance, some of my friends are from other countries, and this has not hindered us from working together and helping each other as friends.

General courses have helped me in becoming global citizens in various ways. For instance, I have learnt how to appreciate various cultures. For instance, I can interact with people from different countries who help me in understanding their culture. Therefore, I have come to appreciate the cultures and also embracing the cultures. General courses have also helped me in understanding how different people reason and it has also helped me in learning how to act when interacting with different people (Reysen & Katzarska-Miller, 2012). They have changed my way of reasoning, in such that, I can reflect on my actions and see if I will hurt people. For instance, what appears to be accepted in one country may not be accepted in another; therefore, I can reflect on the differences between the cultures before taking any actions.
