In the first part of this essay, with our view of community as a network and our understanding of the city from a political economic perspective (Logan and Molotch and Hackworth), explore the following themes: This period we are in, modernity, or late-modernity, is marked by a shift in social relationships where once our identities were created and sustain by face-to-face interactions revolving around a shared sense of place or the bonds of kinship, which, in turn, created “communities of fate.” The new community formation is characterized as “communities of choice.” Explain what this shift from “communities of fate” to “communities of choice” entails and what the implications are for identity and democracy in our society. Do you agree with this formulation? Make the case for and against this formulation. Draw on Neal, Logan and Molotch, and especially Hackworth, and our discussions in class. Pay particular attention in the final part of your paper to the implications of the changing networks for our democracy and our identity and the unevenness of this idea of fate and choice across the social spectrum.
